The spread on a Manchester cocktail is wider than on any other drink we track. The same classic - a negroni, an old fashioned - runs from about £8 in the Northern Quarter to £15 in Spinningfields, and the difference is far more about postcode and rent than about the pour.

Where to go depends on what you want from the room. Northern Quarter bars do serious drinks in casual surroundings and are the best value in the city. Spinningfields and Deansgate are polished, expensive and built for occasions. The Gay Village runs later than anywhere else and is the most fun on a Friday.

Almost every bar on this list runs a happy hour or a two-for-one window on weekdays, typically between 4pm and 7pm. That routinely halves the prices below, so if the cost is the barrier, go early.
