Manchester city centre has more good pubs per square mile than any English city outside London, and unusually for a city centre, the best ones are not the most expensive. The Victorian tiled houses, the Holt's and Hydes tied pubs and the surviving backstreet boozers all sit at the cheap end of this list while comfortably out-drinking the glass-fronted bars charging twice as much.
